Our family's thanksgiving consisted of family that has all spent significant time in the U.S. The oldest generation present was my parents/uncles/aunts and they all entered the work force around the computer boom. It was no suprise most of them talked about the computer as a necessary component to their job. My dad, who came from India to study engineering at Cornell University, learned computer skills through college and his following jobs - remarkably with little difficulty, probably because of his deep interest in computers. His work in engineering required computer use, which is probably was expedited the learning process. He is now very advanced in his computer literacy.
He said it was tough to judge how computers affected the workplace and his enjoyment because they were a necessity from the beginning. Computers and the internet has increased the scope of his job, as he communicates with partners overseas (normally China and Japan). All type of programs, such as financial analysis programs, are also crucial to the job. However, if I were to make a guess, I would say computers have probably added to my dad's enjoyment because he is quite fascinated by computers and technology in general. With his in-depth knowledge of computers, we've built a "media center" computer - or for our class' purposes, the ultimate information center. Some examples of the forms of information we receive from this computer include DVDs, CDs, live television (both through antennae and Dish), music, pictures, radio, and the internet.

Both of my parents felt the same way about computers having been a necessity in their fields since they got out of college. All of their jobs have been directly dealing with computers and computer software of some type. They didn't have any idea what they would be doing if computers didn't exist.
